Best Nokia 5.3 Review

Best Nokia 5.3 Review: On an average, there are at least two launches in the sub Rs 15,000 cost category at a month in India.

Needless to say, the category is a popular market for smartphone companies and there is extreme competition here to offer the best smartphone experience.

One recent handset that also made an entry comes from the house of HMD Global.

The business launched Nokia 5.3 that is offered at a starting price of Rs 13,999 from the country which really does pack in a lot of specs and on paper promises to offer you an overall satisfactory experience.

We utilized the handset to find out whether it has the potential to be our next purchase or not and here is our review:

Layout and screen

If you prefer your smart phone to be subtle and not sport those showy gradient designs then you will like the plan gofo the Nokia 5.3.

The smartphone provides a clean simple back panel that’s neither shiny nor a complete matte finish and lies somewhere between.

The Nokia 5.3 comes from Charcoal Cyan and Sand color options and we have the Charcoal one as our inspection unit.

The back of the smartphone houses a quad camera set up in a circular rim design in the centre that just slightly protrudes. Right in the middle of the rim, you will find that the LED flashlight.

Underneath the camera sensors, there is a fingerprint detector, which we believed was placed at an optimum position, followed with a Nokia branding.

In our experience, we believed that the back to be somewhat more likely to fingerprints and thus you feel the need to wash it up sooner than that you’d like or use a case.

At the underside edge of this Nokia 5.3, you get a USB Type-C jack, a 3.5mm audio jack as well as the speaker grille.

The perfect edge of the device houses the power button and the volume control keys. In the top is the point where the SIM card tray is placed, which provides dual SIM support along with a microSD card.

Looking at the competition, you may surely get a better screen concerning specs, however, there is nothing lacking from the screen experience as such. The colours seem vibrant, seeing at tricky angles is also comfy and sun exposure is also pretty good.

You get a 20:9 aspect ratio, that is par for the course within this segment and a Corning Gorilla 3 glass defense that is said to protect the screen.

Performance

Powering the Nokia 5.3 is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 SoC. While the chip is not the fastest you could get in this budget, the operation isn’t compromised since there were no issues that we faced during our day to day usage too.

We do want that the company could have gone to get a more recent processor for the longevity of the handset.

Buyers get up to 6GB of RAM and 64GB internal storage. For people who may believe that they want more storage, they could install microSD cards up to 512GB.

As we mentioned previously , we had no issues in the daily performance of the handset as it managed to provide a general lag-free performance.

Basic and essential tasks like switching between apps, video screening and long display hours are done without any hassle. We had no complaints from the call quality and sound quality as well.

With that said, the key highlight of this Nokia 5.3, however, is its own operating system. The handset runs on stock Android 10 because it is part of Android One programme.

This means you receive a clean UI that does not come pre-installed with bloatware, which is something phones from the greatest players of the price range don’t provide.

You can expect the unit to get regular security upgrades for up to three years, which will be again where the handset has an upper hand.

Camera

The Nokia 5.3 houses a quad-camera set up with a 13MP primary camera. Though the market is brimming with handsets that are promised to be camera-centric within this price category, the Nokia 5.3 doesn’t offer you the megapixels.

But overall the camera’s performance is much more balanced than we expected.

The images recorded in the daytime in the principal detector turned out to be nicely detailed. The close up shots were quite nice and the portrait result was also more or less accurate.

But we didn’t like the images that were clicked out of the ultra-wide angle sensor as they did capture grainy and the colour reproduction was also somewhat off.

The low-light images were the largest problem area as the images lacked sharpness and were grainy. Enabling the Night style did help though.

The camera app of the Nokia 5.3 is super easy and provides quick scene detection, making it effortless for anyone and everyone to use without needing to search for concealed settings and manners.

Battery

You get a 4000mAh battery paired with 10W charging support. This includes tasks such as calling, internet browsing as well as GPS tracking, viewing online videos and more.

We’d have liked a speedy charge service for the device to decrease the charging time.

Verdict

As stated in the beginning, Nokia 5.3 is put in the most crowded smartphone segment in India. So picking among them is not a simple task.

The Nokia 5.3 is overall a wholesome package for a device for a starting price of Rs 13,999. Additionally, courtesy its clean UI, the smartphone stands apart in the audience.
