Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 Road Testing Best Review

Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600: It seems that the timing is perfect to say that “The sky’s the limit!” When we talk about SUVs, we will discuss their opulence.

The SUV’s upper tiers have surpassed the limits of performance and price. Top marques now have ways to attach their emblems to high-riding cars. The Mercedes-Maybach GLS is the latest addition to this fancy fair. This is not a more expensive variant of the popular SUV.

This is because the Maybach GLS comes standard with most of the latest-age technology that we were baffled by on the GLS, but which never made it to India, What you’ll get when you sign the cheque is not just exclusive paint and upholstery, but also the most cutting-edge technology available in production-spec fossil-fuelled cars.

Design

Customers often walk into luxury car showrooms and buy the model they want, but only in the specification and colour that is offered by the dealer. Don’t rush to buy the GLS 600 if you don’t feel satisfied later.

This car is not one you can just buy from an inventory. Instead, you customize it to your liking and have a lot of fun choosing the paints, materials, and finishes. It’s more relaxing than decorating your home.

Remember that only you and your guests can see the choices you make and how well your home is set up, but everyone else has access to your tastes with a car this ordered. The Maybach GLS is an advertisement for your celebrity wealth.

This Maybach GLS is dressed in a combination of obsidian black lowers and rubellite uppers. This was the only Maybach GLS in two-tones that had landed in the country at the time of the test.

It is a sign of its exclusivity. The combination of Emerald green and Mojave Silver would be my choice if I had to pick between the five default options.

Like the old days, the Maybach GLS has a three-pointed Star on its hood. This car provides high pedestrian safety despite its location. You won’t likely hit a pedestrian because of pedestrian detection and automatic braking.

I also foresee Maybach GLS’ rolling down the streets gracefully and unhurried. It is difficult for pedestrians to miss a car so large and shiny coming towards them.

The Maybach has the same wheelbase and length as the standard GLS, but it looks larger due to the two-tone paint scheme and vertically slatted grille. It is actually 31mm wider than it appears on paper. It is 31mm wider on paper.

This is the Maybach emblem’s highest position. The Maybach shares the lines and peripherals of the GLS, except for the paintwork and the large chrome louvres at the bumpers.

The adaptive multi-beam LED headlights are equipped with adaptive multi-beam lamps that not only automatically level and illuminate corners and road shoulders according to the steering angle but also adjust the lighting to highlight potential hazards or reduce the glare to other traffic. It works well on both highways and B roads.

It is quite an overwhelming feeling to step into this cabin. This SUV is not a three-row like the GLS. The second row has more space (+93mm), and all the luxury you’d expect from a Maybach.

These seats are capable of giving first-class airline seating a run for their money. It can’t be laid flat so you can nap, but it offers very comfortable seating and support for your hind muscles.

You won’t complain about the angle of your rear seat – from the reach to recline (upto 43 degrees) to how intense the bolstering is – it can be adjusted to any degree. Individual trays are available for snacks or work, while the refrigerator can be used for Dom Perignons, Chevals, Chateaus and Chevals. Holders for sparkling Champagne flutes complete the package.

Beautiful wheels add function and beauty to the Maybach’s elegance. Mercedes-Benz offers a set 23-inch forged wheels if you prefer the chunkier, older-fashioned look to the modern-age machined finish.

The Maybach hubcap can rotate with the wheel. These wheels make the Maybach 15mm higher than the standard GLS.

Cabin

The electronic suspension drops automatically when you unlock the car. A chunky running board appears on the handle and allows you to gracefully enter the cabin. The interiors are very different from the standard GLS.

This is evident in the two screens and the square vents. The cabin can be draped in a variety of colours and materials, just like the exterior.

The cabin of our test car was finished in a combination of beige and tan upholstery, and lining. Inlays were made in high-gloss lime and open-pore walnut wood.

This is all customizable to a certain extent. However, I believe I would choose this combination over any other Blacks or Whites.

An elevated cradle wirelessly charges the phone (though my 12 Pro Max did not fit), while another embedded cradle stores the Samsung tablet and acts as a remote control for windows, sunroofs, blinds, media, and 64-colour ambient lighting.

The rear entertainment system is provided by two screens located at the rear of each of the front seats. It’s completed with a 13-speaker Burmester audio system. For a more peaceful cabin experience, the audio unit helps to reduce road and engine noises.

Both the rear and front seats have heating, cooling, and massaging functions. The driver’s seat, on the other hand, is about technology and the road. Rear seats are about luxury.

The two-screen layout of the GLS has the same MBUX NTG6 O and telematics as the GLS, but there are additional features hidden deep in the menus.

For example, the car wash mode, which is enabled when it automatically rolls and closes all windows. Turn off the wipers, headlamps, and wipers to prepare the car for jet sprays.

The Energizer function can detect fatigue using inputs from Attention Assist and communicate with a proprietary fitness track to determine when it would be a good idea to give you a massage, a fresh smelt of the onboard perfume, or even change the speed of the music.

You can choose to have the scent of leather so your car smells new all the time. You can also have the smell of woods, which you won’t be driving this car into.

Driving Dynamics

The Maybach GLS is a great choice for those who want to go against the grain and aren’t afraid of scratching expensive paint. The suspension, which is state-of-the-art and controlled by the 48V electrical system, is located between them.

Electronic-Active Bod Control, as it is called in the brochure, can alter the compression and damping of each wheel. It can also raise or lower that wheel to overcome an obstacle with dignity.

You can bounce the car around like a low-rider but it is also able to adjust the compression and damping.

This suspension’s prowess in the real world results in a very comfortable ride. The big Maybach can sense most speed bumps using its radars and front-facing cameras.

The car will almost mimic the sensation of the wheels lifting from the hump if you slow down in advance.

It’s an amazing sensation that sets the Maybach GLS apart from other cars. Even on our roads, I’ve had to ride some of its more expensive competitors and none compare to the Maybach GLS.

Mercedes-Benz does not make motorcycles. However, they have perfected the art of making certain cars lean into corners to prevent roll. This function allows the Maybach GLS with E-ABC to tackle bends with a touch of class.

When we first drove the GLS in 2019, you will recall that I had announced the return of a GLS Maybach. The Maybach variant was designed right from the beginning of the GLS.

It was also developed with the ultra-luxurious requirements of this class in mind. Many believe the GLS lends its active chassis and to the Maybach.

However, the GLS is actually the one that benefits from the many technologies that make the Maybach variant a compelling rival to the Rolls Royce Cullinan or the Bentley Bentayga.

This luxury SUV is powered by a 4.0l AMG V8, which produces around 560PS and 730Nm torque. It’s not overwhelming, so it’s easy to get motivated.

The Maybach driving mode flattens the acceleration curve, reduces vibrations and noise levels, and shifts earlier to minimize transmission shock.

The 48V mild hybrid system has an EQ Boost function that adds 21PS and 250 Nm to the power, ensuring there are no unwelcome jerks or power surges. This car is an excellent conversation starter.

However, Sport mode can allow the Maybach GLS to sprint between 0 and 100 kmph in 5.0 seconds (tested).

The EQ Boost mentioned above also helps to reduce emissions and improve the fuel economy. The 9-speed gearbox is as efficient as ever and, even in Sport mode, it limits its aggression to the engine bay.

The 4MATIC AWD quietly puts the power down and the system performs well around bends without too much understeer. Eight airbags protect the cabin and provide additional assistance to the powertrain with radar-guided assistants such as adaptive cruise control, collision detection, and automated braking aid.

Verdict

The Maybach GLS is both safe and comfortable. It protects your privacy while promoting your celebrity status.

The Maybach GLS is priced at Rs 2.43 crore and offers a practical alternative to Maybach S-Class. The 50 cars that were allocated to India in 2021 have been sold. The next batch of cars will arrive in 2022.

It’s not surprising then, that they are all gone. While I am happy that I was the first Indian to test drive the Maybach GLS, Martin, the top boss of Mercedes-Benz India, shared an important statistic with us: Most Maybach GLS buyers in India are between 40-45 years old. Do I feel stuck in the wrong job?
